Episode 191. Curious: Rethinking Our Approach to Drugs and Addiction with Christina Dent
In this episode of the Forge of Freedom podcast, Alex is joined by Christina Dent, an author, TEDx speaker, and the founder of End It For Good, a nonprofit advocating for health-centered drug policies.
Christina, a conservative Christian from Mississippi, initially held a black-and-white view of addiction, seeing it through a lens of moral absolutes. Her perspective dramatically changed in 2014 when she and her husband became foster parents. Meeting the mother of one of her foster sons—a woman struggling with addiction—gave her a front-row seat to the human toll of addiction and drug laws. This experience prompted her to question her beliefs and led her to found End It For Good and write the book,
Curious: A Foster Mom’s Discovery of an Unexpected Solution to Drugs and Addiction.
Key topics discussed:
- The “Human Element”: Alex and Christina discuss how her personal story, detailed in her book, brings a crucial human element to the discussion around the war on drugs. Christina shares the story of meeting the mother of her foster son, Joanne, and how that relationship challenged her long-held beliefs about people who use drugs.
- The Consequences of the War on Drugs: Alex, a criminal defense attorney, shares his perspective from representing parents in cases involving the Department of Child Services, highlighting the “unintended consequences” of current drug laws. Christina argues that a criminal record is a “guarantee” to destroy a person’s life, and that the justice system, designed to inflict trauma, is counterproductive in addressing addiction, a problem often made worse by trauma.
- The Rat Park Experiment: Christina explains Bruce Alexander’s “Rat Park” experiment, which suggests that the context of a person’s life, rather than the drugs themselves, plays a key role in addiction. She notes that the rats living in an enriched environment chose the regular water over the drug-laced water, and when they did use it, they didn’t become compulsive users or overdose.
- Why Everyone Should Care: Christina makes the case that drug policies affect everyone, whether they realize it or not. She explains how the drug trade destabilizes political systems and fuels violence, and how drug convictions create barriers to education and employment, contributing to family separation and societal harm. She also points out the disparity in outcomes for people with and without financial resources who commit the same crime.
- Rethinking the Approach: Christina challenges the idea that legalizing drugs condones their use. She draws a parallel to other behaviors that are considered harmful or sinful but not criminalized, arguing that the justice system is not the right tool to handle all such behaviors. She highlights that the criminalization of drugs creates unregulated black markets, which increase the potency of substances and lead to violence.
- Resources and Hope: The episode concludes with Christina offering resources for people with loved ones struggling with addiction. She recommends the book
Beyond Addiction: How Science and Kindness Help People Heal and programs like Invitation to Change and CRAFT. Christina emphasizes the importance of not losing hope and celebrating small victories.
